Neem - need of Today and Tomorrow
Neem is an evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent, and can grow almost all types of soils and agro-climatic conditions. it has been regarded as a 'Wonder tree', with a vast range of medicinal properties, and products derived from this tree can be used by farmers as pesticides and as "Nitrification Inhibitor" when Neem cake is used in combination with urea.
To harness the qualities of this wonder tree, many programs are being implemented by the "UNITED NATION DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION" (UNIDO) / Regional network On pesticide for Asia and the Pacific (RENPAP).

The Neem possesses many biological activities such as insecticial, nematicidal, bactericidal, spermicidal, antiviral, antifungal, diuretic and antipuretic etc.
Plants containing biotoxins can be more interesting than synthetic chemical pesticides due to its inherent combination of chemical substances. Neem, a natural bio-toxin, tested carefully, proved to be great promise for being used as natural pesticides.
Biological Effects of Neem
- Insect growth regulator
More than 100 triterpenoid Compounds have been isolated and identified. These compounds possess different biological activity. The compounds have been grouped as below –
1) Azadirachtin and its analogues group
AZADIRACHTINE : A wonderful triterpinoid, a tetranor triterpenoid
Among these Azadirachtine (C35H44O16) is the main active ingredient. It has antifeedant, repellent, insecticidal, nematicidal, fungicidal, insect growth regulator and sterilization properties. It interferes with ecdysone, the key insect moulting hormone and prevents larvae and pupae of the insect from completing the moulting process. It does not develop resistance in the insects. It is presumed that aza stimulate the neuron which is responsible for antifeedant activities. Such compounds are termed as ‘deterrent neuron’. These neurones are stimulated by aza in case of Pieris brassicae, Lymantria dispar, Hypsipyla grandella, Spodoptera exempta, S. littoralis, S. frugiperda, Helicoverpa armigera and Mamestra brassicae. This aza when goes inside the host causes growth disturbances and act as insect growth regulator. Aza does not have bad effects on mammals, birds and useful insects.
